Inthefirstquarterwesuccessfullynavigatedoperationalandrestructuringchallengeswithagilityanddetermination.Weleveragedourimprovedoperationalefficiencytoacceleratemomentumandachieverobustfinancialresults.Thequarterwasatestamenttoourcommitmenttodeliverincreasedvaluetoourshareholdersandlaidasolidfoundationfor2024andbeyond.Aswecontinuetoevolveandadapttoachangingbusinesslandscapeweremainfocusedonexecutingonourprofitablegrowthstrategyandtodeliveronourtargets.
StrongfinancialdevelopmentThefirstquartermarkedanotherstepupinourfinancialperformanceasStoryteldeliveredastrongresultwithimprovedprofitabilityandoperationalcashflow. Thegroup’sadjustedEBITDAincreased167percentto104MSEK,reachingthehighestlevelinStorytel'shistory,equaltoamarginof11.7percent.Theoperationalcashflowwas73MSEKequalto8.2percentofrevenues.Totalgrouprevenuegrew12percentwhilestreamingrevenuegrew13percent.IntheNordics,the13percentgrowthinrevenueswasdrivenbothbyhigheraveragerevenueperuser, duetopriceincreasescarriedoutlateinthefirstquarter2023,anda6percentgrowthinaveragepayingsubscribersto1.2million.Goingforward,revenuegrowthintheNordicswillbedrivenmorebytheintakeofnewsubscribers,andwerecognizethatthemarketwillremainchallengingascompetitioninourhomeregioncontinuestobefierce.WeplantoaccelerateNordicsubscriberandrevenuegrowthbycontinuingtodevelopamoredifferentiated,attractivelypackaged,andcustomer-orientedservice.Non-Nordicstreamingrevenuesgrew13percent,mostlydrivenbythe18percent
increaseinouraveragesubscriberbaseto1.1million.ProgresswasparticularlyevidentinourfourNon-Nordicgrowthmarkets- TheNetherlands,Poland,BulgariaandTurkey-withmorethan25percentincreaseinaveragepayingsubscribers.IntheUS,Audiobooks.comalsoenjoyedstrongsubscribergrowthonthebackofgeneralmarketgrowthandhighermarketingefficiency.WeanticipatesteadygrowthinNon-Nordicstreamingthroughouttheyear, drivenbyacombinationofsustained,strongcustomerintakecombinedwithincreasedaveragerevenueperuser.Ascomparedtothepreviousquarter,averagerevenueperusercamedownasnewsubscriberintakewaspredominantlydriveningeographiesandinpaymentplanswithloweraveragerevenueperuser.TotalsalesintheBookssegmentincreased7percent.Externalsalesgrewby1percentto131MSEKwhileinternalsalesgrewby22percent.StorytelBookshadapositivefirstquarterwithincreaseddigitalsalesbothexternallyandinternally,showcasingthequalityandappealofourcontentportfolio.RevenuegrowthinexternalsaleswasalsosupportedbyStorytelBooks’recentlyrenewedagreementwithNextoryto

CommitmenttodeliveringhighqualitycontentOurcontentstrategyisgainingtraction,withconsumptionoftitlesfromourinternalpublishersshowingsteadygrowth.InQ1,titlesfromourdigitalinhousepublisherStorysidereachedrecordconsumptionlevels.TrueCrimeformatslikeHomosexligansomstyrdeSverigebyErikGalliandMinKampforRetfærdighedbyTheaPedersen&JaneFisher-ByrialsenengagedusersinSwedenandDenmarkupontheirreleases.Additionally,weareproudtohaveproducedthefirsteverTurkishaudiobookreleaseofoneofthemostbelovedsagasofalltime,TheLordoftheRings. I amalsoexcitedthatNorstedtswillbereleasingthememoirsofSwedishtennislegendBjörnBorgin2025,availableinbothprintandaudiobookformats.Since2015,StorytelAwardshaveannuallycelebratedtalentedauthorsandnarratorswhocaptivateandentertainaudiobooklisteners.Thisspring,ceremonieswerearrangedinStockholm,Helsinki,Copenhagen,Oslo,Reykjavik,andAmsterdamwheretheStorytelaudience’sfavoritenarratorsandauthorswereawardedover60statuettes.Theseawardsareatestamenttoourcommitmenttorecognizeexcellenceandfosterthegeneralgrowthofaudiobooks.
Drivingsuccessthroughefficiencyandinnovation
Thisquarterwemadebigstridesinenhancingefficienciesandstreamliningourteamstobetteralignwithourstrategicobjectives.Thematureandresilientapproachdemonstratedbyourteamsthroughoutthisrestructuringprocessis
commendable.Asaresult,wehavebeenabletooptimizeouroperations,reduceredundancies,andcreatedaleanerandmoreagileorganization.InFebruary,welaunchedVoiceSwitcherinSweden,agroundbreakingfeatureenhancingtheaudiobookexperiencebyallowinglistenerstoswitchbetweenhumanandAInarrators.Notably,renownedSwedishactorStefanSaukcollaboratedwithusonthisproject.HisAI-generatedvoiceisalreadyavailableon25audiobookstogetherwithseveralotherAIvoices,providinglistenerswithdiversenarrationoptions.Thereceptionhasbeenencouraging,andweexpecttointroduceVoiceSwitcherinadditionallanguagessoon.Servicedifferentiationremainsatoppriorityforus,andwehaveinvestedsignificantlyinpositioningStorytelwithuniquecontentandproductfeatures.Asanextstep,weareexploringnewpricingpackagesandoffersforourstreamingplatform,expectedtorolloutlaterthisyear.I canproudlystatethatweareofftoastrongstart in2024,thankstothededication,resilience,andinnovativespiritofourteam;andI amoptimisticabouttheremainderofthisyearandbeyond.Asrecentlyannounced,I willstepdownasCEOofStorytelGroupduringthefall.Thecompanyhasbeenthrougharemarkabletransformationduringthelastyearsandisnowagrowing,profitableandinnovativebusinessingoodshape.Inserviceofourmissionto“MovetheWorldthroughStory”, IhaveconfidencethatStorytelwillcontinuetocreatesustainablevalueforouremployees,customersandshareholdersforalongtimetocome.
